Visitors entering the exhibition hall at Boston 2026 met something unexpected: a Rolls-Royce Phantom IV State Landaulette used by Queen Elizabeth II, including on her 1956 tour of Nigeria. The car anchored a special exhibit marking the centenary of her birth.
Around it, the exhibit traced the image of the monarchy from Queen Victoria to Elizabeth II, as it was reproduced across the British Empire and later the Commonwealth. Stamps were shown beside banknotes, coronets from twentieth-century coronations and archival film of the Queen's visit to Nigeria.
Alex co-curated the exhibit as a temporary, museum-scale installation in the spirit of context philately, open only for the eight days of the show. Among its marquee pieces was an 1840 letter bearing a Penny Black, the world's first postage stamp.
